Dystopia

A graphic design thesis project by Sara Golak for the 2018 Spring Undergraduate Exhibition at OCAD University.

Dystopia examines the blurring boundaries between the physical and digital environments.  The goal is to encourage a lifestyle that is balanced between the two realities. This notion is the core of the call-to-action campaign, Setting Digital Boundaries, where I invite you to take a look at your own digital habits and take charge of your digital presence. A dystopian model is used to portray a society that is highly dependent on digital technology and borders a state of dehumanization.

As much as we are appreciative of online openness, many of us do not realize that our data is out there in the world. For example, we are confronted with the dangers of sharing too much information on social networks. By familiarizing yourself with the concept of digital citizen, you will be able to protect your personal data, such as preventing a digital trail.

Setting Digital Boundaries campaign encompasses a video, poster, sticker/magnet and a website that provides more information on data privacy and guidance on obtaining a digital citizenship identity.

Director / Editor / Graphics

ABOUT

An educative film piece about our online presence. It discusses topics such as communication, safety, relationships, addiction, privacy etc. These concepts are conveyed by following an average daily routine of an internet addict in first-person.

The idea of being ‘alerted’ about an issue online has become a natural process that is relevant today, in which users use this system as a dominant form of communication. We need to be reminded about our responsibility to use these tools effectively and appropriately to enhance lives, not corrupt it with overuse.

Campaign Poster

Set Digital Boundaries campaign poster raises awareness about the issues of privacy and surveillance. It comments on the use of biometrics via everyday devices and how privacy is disregarded with the amount of information a user provides about themselves online. The design output uses the lenticular technique that allows for more than one image to be seen at certain angles.

Thesis_Dystopia_Website_SARAGOLAK

A guide for you to use towards obtaining a digital citizenship identity. It provides a list of resources for further reading and in-depth information on the responsibilities of using the internet in a safe and appropraite manner. The website also includes tips and relevant facts for your knowledge.

NOTE: WEBSITE DESIGNED FOR LARGER SCREENS

Set Digital Boundaries: Sticker

The sticker is designed to act as a reminder for us to stay true to our digital citizenship identity. These stickers can be applied anywhere, but its main purpose is to be applied to devices that you use everyday, such as a cellphone or your computer. This way, the message will be a constant visual reminder for us to re-think our daily lifestyle.

Bonus - As a fun addition to the concept, a magnet is designed as an alternative so that you can apply it even in your car or on your fridge!

CONTEXT

The identity for Dystopia is designed by using the notion of a glitch effect, thus applying the way it creates disorder and separation. The word ‘stop’ in dystopia is emphasized as a foreshadowing of preventing the dystopian outlook on future technology.
